Contributing to the discussions on the role of physical appearance in robotics, we apply a phenomenological theory of the body to develop a new understanding of the robot body. Drawing on Edmund Husserl's phenomenological distinction between the material and the lived body, we consider the robot body as “double” since it entails both objective and subjective aspects. We assume that the expressivity of “double bodies” can be seen as central in understanding the phenomenon of aliveness in social robots.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-61499-708-5-210","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,20]],"date-time":"2025-02-20T12:06:08Z","timestamp":1740053168000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Motions with Emotions?"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Parviainen Jaana","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"van Aerschot Lina","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Särkikoski Tuomo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Pekkarinen Satu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Melkas Helinä","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"family":"Hennala Lea","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","What Social Robots Can and Should Do"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,20]],"date-time":"2025-02-20T13:00:28Z","timestamp":1740056428000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISBN&isbn=978-1-61499-707-8&spage=210&doi=10.3233\/978-1-61499-708-5-210"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2016]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-61499-708-5-210","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2016]]}}}
