Electronic Health Records (EHRs) are maturing with new technology and tools being applied. Researchers are reaping the benefits of data visualization to better access compilations of EHR data for enhanced clinical research. Data visualization, while still primarily the domain of clinical researchers, is beginning to show promise for other stakeholders. A non-exhaustive review of the literature indicates that respective to the growth and development of the EHR, the maturity of data visualization in healthcare is in its infancy. Visual analytics has been only cursorily applied to healthcare. A fundamental issue contributing to fragmentation and poor coordination of healthcare delivery is that each member of the healthcare team, including patients, has a different view. Summarizing all of this care comprehensively for any member of the healthcare team is a “wickedly hard” visual analytics and data visualization problem to solve.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-61499-830-3-308","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T03:25:19Z","timestamp":1740108319000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Developing Visual Thinking in the Electronic Health Record"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Boyd Andrew D.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Young Christine D.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Amatayakul Margret","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Dieter Michael G.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Pawola Lawrence M.","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Studies in Health Technology and Informatics","MEDINFO 2017: Precision Healthcare through Informatics"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T03:35:58Z","timestamp":1740108958000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISBN&isbn=978-1-61499-829-7&spage=308&doi=10.3233\/978-1-61499-830-3-308"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2017]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-61499-830-3-308","relation":{"is-cited-by":[{"id-type":"doi","id":"10.1007\/978-3-030-70558-9_14","asserted-by":"object"}]},"ISSN":["0926-9630"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0926-9630","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2017]]}}}
