Such a system could be useful for purposive interpretation of norms. A previous work on mapping recitals and normative provisions was limited to EU legislation in English and only one lexical text similarity technique. In this paper, we develop state-of-the-art text similarity models to investigate the interplay between directive recitals, directive (sub-)articles and provisions of national implementing measures (NIMs) on a multilingual corpus (from Ireland, Italy and Luxembourg). Our results indicate that directive recitals do not have a direct influence on NIM provisions, but they sometimes contain additional information that is not present in the transposed directive sub-article, and can therefore facilitate purposive interpretation.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/faia200856","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,12,3]],"date-time":"2020-12-03T11:52:55Z","timestamp":1606996375000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Multilingual Legal Information Retrieval System for Mapping Recitals and Normative Provisions"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"given":"Rohan","family":"Nanda","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Maastricht Law and Tech Lab, Faculty of Law, Maastricht University, Netherlands"},{"name":"Institute of Data Science, Maastricht University, Netherlands"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Llio","family":"Humphreys","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Computer Science Department, University of Turin, Italy"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Lorenzo","family":"Grossio","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Law Department, University of Turin, Italy"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Adebayo","family":"Kolawole John","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Businesspoint Intelligence Solutions Ltd, Ireland"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","Legal Knowledge and Information Systems"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"http:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/pdf\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA200856","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2020,12,3]],"date-time":"2020-12-03T11:52:55Z","timestamp":1606996375000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"http:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA200856"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2020,12,1]]},"ISBN":["9781643681504","9781643681511"],"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/faia200856","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389","1879-8314"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"},{"value":"1879-8314","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2020,12,1]]}}}
