We relax the assumption that case bases are such that all situations have been decided in favour of the defendant or the plaintiff and we introduce an inductive strategy for assigning plausible outcomes to undecided cases. Using counterfactual reasoning, we propose a method to determine whether, at each step of the induction, a feature is a factor, i.e., it consistently favours a single outcome, or is irrelevant, i.e., it is does not favour any outcome, or is ambiguous, i.e., it favours opposite outcomes.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/faia230942","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2023,12,11]],"date-time":"2023-12-11T09:35:52Z","timestamp":1702287352000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["Inferring New Classifications in Legal Case-Based Reasoning"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"given":"Cecilia","family":"Di Florio","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Alma Human AI, University of Bologna, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Xinghan","family":"Liu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IRIT-CNRS, University of Toulouse, France"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Emiliano","family":"Lorini","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IRIT-CNRS, University of Toulouse, France"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Antonino","family":"Rotolo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Alma Human AI, University of Bologna, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Giovanni","family":"Sartor","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Alma Human AI, University of Bologna, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","Legal Knowledge and Information Systems"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/pdf\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA230942","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2023,12,11]],"date-time":"2023-12-11T09:35:53Z","timestamp":1702287353000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA230942"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2023,12,7]]},"ISBN":["9781643684727","9781643684734"],"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/faia230942","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389","1879-8314"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"},{"value":"1879-8314","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2023,12,7]]}}}
