Traditional methods have often been limited to recognizing sign languages from specific linguistic regions, necessitating ad hoc implementation for multilingual regions. Our method aims to bridge this gap by providing a unified framework for recognizing sign languages in various linguistic areas and promoting global communication. At the core of our system is the Editable Mediator, a mechanism that determines the actual sign meaning from various local hand-shape recognitions. Instead of focusing on specific sign language notations, such as HamNoSys, our approach emphasizes the recognition of common primitive actions shared across different sign languages. These primitive actions are recognized by multiple modules, and their combinations are interpreted by the Editable Mediator to determine the intended sign-language message. This architecture not only simplifies the recognition process, but also offers flexibility. By merely editing the Editable Mediator, our system can adapt to various sign languages worldwide without the need for extensive retraining or ad hoc implementation. This innovation reduces barriers to introducing new sign language systems and promotes a more inclusive global communication platform.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/faia231158","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,1,17]],"date-time":"2024-01-17T09:22:09Z","timestamp":1705483329000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["A New Global Sign Language Recognition System Utilizing the Editable Mediator: Integration with Local Hand Shape Recognition"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-1029-6063","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Takafumi","family":"Nakanishi","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Data Science, Musashino University"},{"name":"Asia AI Institute, Musashino University"}]},{"given":"Ayako","family":"Minematsu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Asia AI Institute, Musashino University"}]},{"given":"Ryotaro","family":"Okada","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Data Science, Musashino University"},{"name":"Asia AI Institute, Musashino University"}]},{"given":"Osamu","family":"Hasegawa","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Data Science, Musashino University"},{"name":"Asia AI Institute, Musashino University"}]},{"given":"Virach","family":"Sornlertlamvanich","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Data Science, Musashino University"},{"name":"Asia AI Institute, Musashino University"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases XXXV"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/pdf\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA231158","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2024,1,17]],"date-time":"2024-01-17T09:22:10Z","timestamp":1705483330000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA231158"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2024,1,16]]},"ISBN":["9781643684765","9781643684772"],"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/faia231158","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389","1879-8314"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"0922-6389"},{"type":"electronic","value":"1879-8314"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2024,1,16]]}}}
