These systems are intended to support scholars, critics, and students by facilitating access to existing analyses of texts, identifying similarities and divergences between interpretations, and more. We propose an approach for documenting interpretations of literary characters, grounded in the empirical practices of literary interpretation to align closely with experts\u2019 methods. To achieve this, we remain neutral regarding the ontological status of characters, instead relying on formal approaches based on linguistics. We demonstrate how our approach can analyze relations between names of fictional characters across texts and authors, bridging discussions in analytic philosophy about identity with the interests of literary scholars.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/faia241299","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,12,13]],"date-time":"2024-12-13T10:21:28Z","timestamp":1734085288000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":3,"title":["Interpreting Texts and Their Characters"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"given":"Emilio M.","family":"Sanfilippo","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"CNR ISTC Laboratory for Applied Ontology, Trento & Catania, Italy"},{"name":"CESR University of Tours, Tours, France"}]},{"given":"Claudio","family":"Masolo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"CNR ISTC Laboratory for Applied Ontology, Trento & Catania, Italy"}]},{"given":"Emanuele","family":"Bottazzi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"CNR ISTC Laboratory for Applied Ontology, Trento & Catania, Italy"}]},{"given":"Roberta","family":"Ferrario","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"CNR ISTC Laboratory for Applied Ontology, Trento & Catania, Italy"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","Formal Ontology in Information Systems"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/pdf\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA241299","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2024,12,13]],"date-time":"2024-12-13T10:21:28Z","timestamp":1734085288000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA241299"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2024,12,11]]},"ISBN":["9781643685618"],"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/faia241299","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389","1879-8314"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"},{"value":"1879-8314","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2024,12,11]]}}}
