This is the question posed in this lecture, which reviews efforts to build ontologies as tools to automate data analysis\u2014or at least make it amenable to computational methods\u2013and argues that ontologies can help to identify and articulate the role and significance of human intervention, values and goals in making sense of data. I exemplify this argument through a study of the Crop Ontology and its application to the study of plant traits.
