This contribution discusses designed friction\u2014deliberate inefficiencies designed to foster engagement, critical reasoning, and user agency. Drawing from friction-in-design and responsible AI, we explore key mechanisms such as cognitive forcing functions, seamful design, and programmed inefficiencies. We propose a research agenda for Hybrid Human-AI systems that balance usability and trust through frictional AI, aiming to provide a stepping stone for the future development of a dedicated research community.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/faia250680","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,9,23]],"date-time":"2025-09-23T14:38:26Z","timestamp":1758638306000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Better AI with Designed Friction: Theories, Applications and Research Agenda"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5171-5239","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Chiara","family":"Natali","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy"},{"name":"SUPSI, Switzerland"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4927-5086","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Mohammad","family":"Naiseh","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Bournemouth University, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4065-3415","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Federico","family":"Cabitza","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy"},{"name":"IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Brett","family":"Frischmann","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Villanova University, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","HHAI 2025"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/pdf\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA250680","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,9,23]],"date-time":"2025-09-23T14:38:26Z","timestamp":1758638306000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA250680"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2025,9,22]]},"ISBN":["9781643686110"],"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/faia250680","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389","1879-8314"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"},{"value":"1879-8314","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2025,9,22]]}}}
