Unlike data-centric approaches, Model Science places the trained model at the core of analysis, aiming to interact, verify, explain, and control its behavior across diverse operational contexts. This paper introduces a conceptual framework for a new discipline called Model Science, along with the proposal for its four key pillars: Verification, which requires strict, context-aware evaluation protocols; Explanation, which is understood as various approaches to explore of internal model operations; Control, which integrates alignment techniques to steer model behavior; and Interface, which develops interactive and visual explanation tools to improve human calibration and decision-making. The proposed framework aims to guide the development of credible, safe, and human-aligned AI systems.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/faia250784","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,22]],"date-time":"2025-10-22T09:42:14Z","timestamp":1761126134000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Model Science: Getting Serious About Verification, Explanation and Control of AI Systems"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-8423-1823","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Przemyslaw","family":"Biecek","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Centre for Credible AI, Warsaw University of Technology, University of Warsaw"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-6283-3265","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Wojciech","family":"Samek","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Artificial Intelligence, Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, Technical University of Berlin, Germany, BIFOLD \u2013 Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","ECAI 2025"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/pdf\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA250784","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,22]],"date-time":"2025-10-22T09:42:14Z","timestamp":1761126134000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA250784"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,21]]},"ISBN":["9781643686318"],"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/faia250784","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389","1879-8314"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"},{"value":"1879-8314","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,21]]}}}
