Courts use PoLs to establish binding precedents that guide decision-making. However, PoLs are expressed in a non-standard way in rulings, making them difficult to identify at a glance without interpretative reading. Our study tested ChatGPT, Claude, and DeepSeek in extracting PoLs, verifying their results with Regular Expressions (RegEx). While Large Language Models (LLMs) showed promise, their outputs required significant expert oversight, revealing limitations in legal research, particularly in terms of accuracy and quantity.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/faia251627","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,12,4]],"date-time":"2025-12-04T12:05:57Z","timestamp":1764849957000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Principles of Law: LLMs vs RegEx"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"given":"Marianna","family":"Molinari","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Bologna - LaST-JD, Legal Studies Dept."},{"name":"University of Turin - Computer Science Dept."},{"name":"Vrije Universiteit Brussel - PREC Dept."}]},{"given":"Ilaria Angela","family":"Amantea","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Turin - Computer Science Dept."}]},{"given":"Marinella","family":"Quaranta","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Bologna - LaST-JD, Legal Studies Dept."},{"name":"University of Turin - Computer Science Dept."},{"name":"Vrije Universiteit Brussel - PREC Dept."}]},{"given":"Guido","family":"Governatori","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Central Queensland University"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","Legal Knowledge and Information Systems"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/pdf\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA251627","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,12,4]],"date-time":"2025-12-04T12:05:57Z","timestamp":1764849957000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA251627"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2025,12,2]]},"ISBN":["9781643686387"],"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/faia251627","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389","1879-8314"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"},{"value":"1879-8314","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2025,12,2]]}}}
