ESE integrates qualitative and quantitative safety methods for an easy to explain justification of functional safety (FuSa) and safety of the intended functionality (Sotif) for complex systems. The article addresses the European Union\u2019s call for objective, coherent safety metrics for Connected and Automated Vehicles and shows how simulation-based test generation can support a statistically sound argument for safety, for which validation tests do not provide sufficient evidence.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/faia251703","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,1,27]],"date-time":"2026-01-27T13:20:19Z","timestamp":1769520019000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Explainable Statistical Evaluation of Emergency Braking Functions in Scenario-Based Safety Testing"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-1313-3924","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Stefan-Alexander","family":"Schneider","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Applied Sciences in Kempten, Bavaria, Germany"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0006-8856-934X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Rainer","family":"Faller","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"exida.com GmbH"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0001-6596-587X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Shreyas","family":"Nanikar","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Applied Sciences in Kempten, Bavaria, Germany"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0003-2207-0894","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Patrick","family":"Svinger","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Applied Sciences in Kempten, Bavaria, Germany"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","Fuzzy Systems and Data Mining XI"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/pdf\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA251703","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,1,27]],"date-time":"2026-01-27T13:20:19Z","timestamp":1769520019000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA251703"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2026,1,27]]},"ISBN":["9781643686448"],"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/faia251703","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389","1879-8314"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"},{"value":"1879-8314","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2026,1,27]]}}}
