Basic models of human control have been defined, as well as AI methods that improve the effectiveness of AWS over humans, including speed, accuracy, and data processing. However, the systems present significant risks associated with a lack of moral accountability, algorithmic opacity and the potential for escalation. The article explores the complexity of the issue by examining the basic concepts, the degree of autonomy, and the role of AI in identifying, targeting and neutralizing targets. The aim of the paper is to investigate the conceptual foundations and definitions that shape the understanding of AWS, analyze the legal frameworks applicable in international context, arising from the integration of AI into AWS.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/faia260034","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,6]],"date-time":"2026-03-06T10:21:09Z","timestamp":1772792469000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Legal Aspects of Artificial Intelligence Application in Autonomous Weapon Systems"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"given":"Boyka","family":"Cherneva","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of National and World Economy, Sofia, Bulgaria"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Petya","family":"Mitreva","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of National and World Economy, Sofia, Bulgaria"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3030-1819","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Dimiter","family":"Velev","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of National and World Economy, Sofia, Bulgaria"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0153-5811","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Plamena","family":"Zlateva","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of National and World Economy, Sofia, Bulgaria"},{"name":"Institute of Robotics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia, Bulgaria"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/pdf\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA260034","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,6]],"date-time":"2026-03-06T10:21:09Z","timestamp":1772792469000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA260034"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,4]]},"ISBN":["9781643686547"],"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/faia260034","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389","1879-8314"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"},{"value":"1879-8314","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,4]]}}}
