Good emotional support could help relieve this stress. This study uses seven scenarios that depict different types of stress and acquires emotional support messages for them. We then categorize and evaluate the emotional support for different types of stress. We found that telling the carer they are appreciated and offering support are the best types of emotional support. Additionally, we found that how well a supporter sympathises with a situation affects the type of support they consider suitable. We describe and evaluate an algorithm that selects different categories of support to be used by an intelligent virtual agent to provide emotional support to carers experiencing different types of stress.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/ia-140072","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2019,12,2]],"date-time":"2019-12-02T17:17:06Z","timestamp":1575307026000},"page":"181-196","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1177\/sage-journals-update-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":10,"title":["The development and evaluation of an emotional support algorithm for carers"],"prefix":"10.1177","volume":"8","author":[{"given":"Kirsten A.","family":"Smith","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Computing Science, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, UK"}]},{"given":"Judith","family":"Masthoff","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Computing Science, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, UK"}]},{"given":"Nava","family":"Tintarev","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Computing Science, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, UK"}]},{"given":"Wendy","family":"Moncur","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Dundee, Dundee, UK"}]}],"member":"179","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2014,1]]},"container-title":["Intelligenza Artificiale: The international journal of the AIxIA"],"original-title":[],"language":"en","link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.3233\/IA-140072","content-type":"application\/pdf","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"text-mining"},{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.3233\/IA-140072","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,3,21]],"date-time":"2025-03-21T13:35:12Z","timestamp":1742564112000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.3233\/IA-140072"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2014,1]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"2","published-print":{"date-parts":[[2014,11]]}},"alternative-id":["10.3233\/IA-140072"],"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/ia-140072","relation":{},"ISSN":["1724-8035","2211-0097"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"1724-8035"},{"type":"electronic","value":"2211-0097"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2014,1]]}}}
