The cancer stem cell (CSC) hypothesis\n\t\t\t provides an explanation for why existing cancer therapies often fail in\n\t\t\t eradicating highly malignant tumors and end with tumor recurrence. Although\n\t\t\t normal stem cells and CSCs both share the capacity for self-renewal and\n\t\t\t multi-lineage differentiation, suggesting that CSC may be derived from normal\n\t\t\t SCs, the cellular origin of transformation of CSCs is debatable. Research\n\t\t\t suggests that the tightly controlled balance of self-renewal and\n\t\t\t differentiation that characterizes normal stem cell function is dis-regulated\n\t\t\t in cancer. Additionally, recent evidence has linked an embryonic stem cell\n\t\t\t (ESC)-like gene signature with poorly differentiated high-grade tumors,\n\t\t\t suggesting that regulatory pathways controlling pluripotency may in part\n\t\t\t contribute to the somatic CSC phenotype. Here, we introduce expression profile\n\t\t\t bioinformatic analyses of mouse breast cells with CSC properties, mouse\n\t\t\t embryonic stem (mES) and induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells with an emphasis\n\t\t\t on how study of pluripotent stem cells may contribute to the identification of\n\t\t\t genes and pathways that facilitate events associated with oncogenesis. Global\n\t\t\t gene expression analysis from CSCs and induced pluripotent stem cell lines\n\t\t\t represent an ideal model to study cancer initiation and progression and provide\n\t\t\t insight into the origin cancer stem cells.
