Predicting disease progression with a probabilistic and time-dependent approach might help suggest interventions for a better management of the disease. Recently, there has been increasing focus on the impact of air pollutants as environmental factors influencing disease progression. This study employs a Continuous-Time Markov Model (CMM) to explore the impact of air pollution measurements on MS progression using longitudinal data from MS patients in Italy between 2013 and 2022. Preliminary findings indicate a relationship between air pollution and MS progression, with pollutants like Particulate Matter with a diameter of 10 micrometers (PM10) or 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), and Carbon Monoxide (CO) showing potential effects on disease activity.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/shti240069","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,5,24]],"date-time":"2024-05-24T08:16:40Z","timestamp":1716538600000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["Continuous Markov Models for Analyzing the Effect of Environmental Personal Exposure on Multiple Sclerosis Progression"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0003-0506-306X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Mahin","family":"Vazifehdan","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Pavia, 27100 Pavia, Italy"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-1431-6044","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Pietro","family":"Bosoni","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Pavia, 27100 Pavia, Italy"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2580-3646","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Eleonora","family":"Tavazzi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IRCCS Mondino Foundation, Pavia, Italy"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-6974-9808","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Riccardo","family":"Bellazzi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Pavia, 27100 Pavia, Italy"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-1397-511X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Roberto","family":"Bergamaschi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"IRCCS Mondino Foundation, Pavia, Italy"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5041-0409","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Arianna","family":"Dagliati","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Pavia, 27100 Pavia, Italy"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Studies in Health Technology and Informatics","pHealth 2024"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/pdf\/doi\/10.3233\/SHTI240069","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2024,5,24]],"date-time":"2024-05-24T08:16:41Z","timestamp":1716538601000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/doi\/10.3233\/SHTI240069"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2024,5,23]]},"ISBN":["9781643685182"],"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/shti240069","relation":{},"ISSN":["0926-9630","1879-8365"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"0926-9630"},{"type":"electronic","value":"1879-8365"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2024,5,23]]}}}
