A total of 262 students prescribed for 2205 patients. The 17,769 prescriptions were spread throughout the 7-day week and were mainly created in the evening (1600-2100) and within 4 hours of patient entry into hospital. The supervising doctors approved 11,434 (64%) prescriptions, which are inferred to have saved 203 hours of doctor time. Allowing medical students to prescribe facilitates clinical workflow. The impact on student education and prescribing errors requires further work.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/shti240703","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,8,23]],"date-time":"2024-08-23T10:23:33Z","timestamp":1724408613000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Electronic Prescribing by Medical Students: Descriptive Data and Inferred Clinical Impact"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-5470-5191","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Paul","family":"Chin","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Medicine, University of Otago, Christchurch, New Zealand"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-2436-4277","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Lorna","family":"Pairman","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Medicine, University of Otago, Christchurch, New Zealand"}]},{"given":"John","family":"Quayle","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Business Intelligence, Data and Analytics, Health NZ, Christchurch, New Zealand"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Studies in Health Technology and Informatics","Digital Health and Informatics Innovations for Sustainable Health Care Systems"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/pdf\/doi\/10.3233\/SHTI240703","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2024,8,23]],"date-time":"2024-08-23T10:23:34Z","timestamp":1724408614000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/doi\/10.3233\/SHTI240703"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2024,8,22]]},"ISBN":["9781643685335"],"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/shti240703","relation":{},"ISSN":["0926-9630","1879-8365"],"issn-type":[{"type":"print","value":"0926-9630"},{"type":"electronic","value":"1879-8365"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2024,8,22]]}}}
