We developed a machine learning model using XGBoost to predict the need for a blood transfusion 2 hours in advance based on up to 7 hours of prior data from two large databases, MIMIC-IV and eICU-CRD. Our federated model showed promising results, with F1 scores of 0.72 and 0.66, respectively.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/shti250311","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,5,16]],"date-time":"2025-05-16T08:53:23Z","timestamp":1747385603000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["A Federated Learning Model for the Prediction of Blood Transfusion in Intensive Care Units"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0000-3107-1619","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Johanna","family":"Schwinn","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Digital Medicine, University Hospital of Augsburg, Augsburg, Germany"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Seyedmostafa","family":"Sheikhalishahi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Digital Medicine, University Hospital of Augsburg, Augsburg, Germany"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Matthaeus","family":"Morhart","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Digital Medicine, University Hospital of Augsburg, Augsburg, Germany"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Mathias","family":"Kaspar","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Digital Medicine, University Hospital of Augsburg, Augsburg, Germany"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Ludwig Christian","family":"Hinske","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Digital Medicine, University Hospital of Augsburg, Augsburg, Germany"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Studies in Health Technology and Informatics","Intelligent Health Systems \u2013 From Technology to Data and Knowledge"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/pdf\/doi\/10.3233\/SHTI250311","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,5,16]],"date-time":"2025-05-16T08:53:23Z","timestamp":1747385603000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/doi\/10.3233\/SHTI250311"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2025,5,15]]},"ISBN":["9781643685960"],"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/shti250311","relation":{},"ISSN":["0926-9630","1879-8365"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0926-9630","type":"print"},{"value":"1879-8365","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2025,5,15]]}}}
