Poor usability can disrupt data flow, hinder workflow integration, and undermine interoperability goals. We developed the Efficient Strategy for Comprehensively Assessing (and fixing) Problems Early (ESCAPE) framework as a practical, theory-driven, two-phase mixed-methods approach for usability evaluation before and after EHR interfacing. Grounded in human\u2013computer interaction and implementation science principles, ESCAPE integrates expert and end-user evaluations using heuristic evaluation, task-based think-aloud protocols, perceived-usability surveys, and cross-phase focus groups to support iterative refinement and readiness for adoption of interoperable health IT tools.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/shti260599","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,5,21]],"date-time":"2026-05-21T22:09:43Z","timestamp":1779401383000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["The ESCAPE Framework: A Practical Two-Phase Mixed-Methods Approach for Usability Evaluation of Interoperable Health IT"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-6023-5309","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Hwayoung","family":"Cho","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Yingwei","family":"Yao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0009-1930-5836","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Taeheon","family":"Lee","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Ghent University Global Campus, Incheon, South Korea"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-2238-5429","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jiang","family":"Bian","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Indiana University and Regenstrief Institute, Indianapolis, IN, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-6364-2524","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Gail","family":"Keenan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Studies in Health Technology and Informatics","Opening the Personal Gate between Technology and Health Care"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/pdf\/doi\/10.3233\/SHTI260599","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,5,21]],"date-time":"2026-05-21T22:09:43Z","timestamp":1779401383000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/doi\/10.3233\/SHTI260599"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2026,5,21]]},"ISBN":["9781643686615"],"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/shti260599","relation":{},"ISSN":["0926-9630","1879-8365"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0926-9630","type":"print"},{"value":"1879-8365","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2026,5,21]]}}}
