However, most approaches rely on pre-imposed regulations that agents are subject to. Taking a different stance, we focus on a normative framework that assists agents in establishing by themselves their own commitment norms. With that aim in mind, a model of norm defeasibility is presented that enables exploiting and adapting a normative background to different extents. We formalize the normative state using first-order logic and define rules and norms operating on that state. A suitable semantics regarding the use of norms within a hierarchical context structure is given, based on norm activation conflict and defeasibility.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/978-1-58603-891-5-468","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T10:21:00Z","timestamp":1740133260000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Norm Defeasibility in an Institutional Normative Framework"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"family":"Lopes Cardoso Henrique","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"family":"Oliveira Eugénio","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","ECAI 2008"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,21]],"date-time":"2025-02-21T11:33:57Z","timestamp":1740137637000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.medra.org\/servlet\/aliasResolver?alias=iospressISSNISBN&issn=0922-6389&volume=178&spage=468"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2008]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/978-1-58603-891-5-468","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2008]]}}}
