The Portuguese archipelago of the Azores, strategically located along their routes, frequently receives such vessels. Currently, ship-to-shore communication relies on email, which is prone to errors and raises data security and privacy concerns. To address these challenges, this article describes the development of a 3-tier web application prototype with a React frontend, Express backend, and PostgreSQL database. This application adheres to the FHIR and openEHR healthcare standards, improving data modeling and creating comprehensive electronic health records. It transcends language barriers and streamlines clinical workflows, promoting seamless data exchange and greater efficiency in patient care. The benefits are substantial: error reduction through comprehensive patient overviews, mitigation of language barrier risks, optimized resource coordination, lowered costs, improved response times, and enhanced experiences for professionals and patients through more accurate, efficient, and secure medical care.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3233\/faia250548","type":"book-chapter","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,9,16]],"date-time":"2025-09-16T13:19:56Z","timestamp":1758028796000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["An Ontology-Based Web Platform for Medical Care on Transatlantic Cruises"],"prefix":"10.3233","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6289-2719","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Hugo","family":"Baptista","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"LASI\/Algoritmi, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3957-2121","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Hugo","family":"Peixoto","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"LASI\/Algoritmi, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0281-2339","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Luis","family":"Gomes","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"LASI\/Algoritmi, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal"},{"name":"Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Azores, Ponta Delgada, Portugal"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4121-6169","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jos\u00e9","family":"Machado","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"LASI\/Algoritmi, University of Minho, Braga, Portugal"}]}],"member":"7437","container-title":["Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and Applications","New Trends in Intelligent Software Methodologies, Tools and Techniques"],"original-title":[],"link":[{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/pdf\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA250548","content-type":"unspecified","content-version":"vor","intended-application":"similarity-checking"}],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,9,16]],"date-time":"2025-09-16T13:19:57Z","timestamp":1758028797000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/ebooks.iospress.nl\/doi\/10.3233\/FAIA250548"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2025,9,16]]},"ISBN":["9781643686196"],"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/faia250548","relation":{},"ISSN":["0922-6389","1879-8314"],"issn-type":[{"value":"0922-6389","type":"print"},{"value":"1879-8314","type":"electronic"}],"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2025,9,16]]}}}
