However, as beneficial as this process has become, it is not without potential negatives. Dairy cattle are a source of greenhouse gases through enteric and waste fermentation as well as excreting nitrogen emissions through their feces and urine. However, these negative impacts vary widely due to how and what these animals are fed. In addition, there are many promising opportunities for further reducing emissions through feed and waste additives. The present review aims to further expand on where the industry is today and the potential avenues for improvement. This area of research is still not complete and additional information is required to further improve our dairy systems impact on sustainable animal products.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3389\/fanim.2021.760310","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,10,20]],"date-time":"2021-10-20T05:22:20Z","timestamp":1634707340000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":47,"title":["Sustainability of the Dairy Industry: Emissions and Mitigation Opportunities"],"prefix":"10.3389","volume":"2","author":[{"given":"Carlyn B.","family":"Peterson","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Frank M.","family":"Mitloehner","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"1965","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,10,18]]},"reference":[{"key":"B1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","first-page":"7409","DOI":"10.3168\/jds.2012-5340","article-title":"Emissions of ammonia, nitrous oxide, methane, and carbon dioxide during storage of dairy cow manure as affected by dietary forage-to-concentrate ratio and crust formation","volume":"95","author":"Aguerre","year":"2012","journal-title":"J.
