In this context, updating knowledge on shark diversity and the threats affecting them in this region is essential to defining priorities and implementing the right management and conservation measures. Here, we show that Cabo Verde, Canarias, Madeira and Azores islands are home to 78 shark species (comprising 26 families), and 56% are threatened with extinction. The Canary Islands revealed the greatest richness (with 56 species), followed by Cabo Verde (53), Madeira (52), and the Azores (45). Cabo Verde presents fewer similarities with the rest of the islands. We also found that: i) Azores share more species with the Canary Islands than Madeira (despite the greater geographical proximity with the latter), and ii) there are no oviparous species in the Cabo Verde archipelago, contrary to the Canary Islands (5), the Azores (4), and Madeira (3). Fishing and habitat degradation are the most relevant anthropogenic pressures for the region, with Cabo Verde having the highest number of endangered species (66%) and a greater magnitude and diversity of threats. As such, this archipelago presents the highest priority area for shark conservation due to the intense industrial fishing in its waters, poor management measures in combination with its greater vulnerability to climate change.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3389\/fmars.2025.1490317","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,5]],"date-time":"2025-02-05T05:17:53Z","timestamp":1738732673000},"update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3389\/crossmark-policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["Sharks in Cabo Verde, Canarias, Madeira and Azores islands: species richness, conservation status and anthropogenic pressures"],"prefix":"10.3389","volume":"12","author":[{"given":"Jaquelino","family":"Varela","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Catarina Pereira","family":"Santos","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Emanuel","family":"Nunes","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Vasco","family":"Pissarra","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Stiven","family":"Pires","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"B\u00e1rbara P.","family":"Ribeiro","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Eduarda","family":"Vieira","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Tiago","family":"Repolho","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Nuno","family":"Queiroz","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Rui","family":"Freitas","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Rui","family":"Rosa","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"1965","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,2,5]]},"reference":[{"key":"B1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.3389\/fmars.2015.00104","article-title":"Marine conservation in the azores: evaluating marine protected area development in a remote island context","volume":"2","author":"Abecasis","year":"2015","journal-title":"Front.
