It is developed within the theoretical framework of knowledge space theory and fuzzy set theory, aiming to address the progressive nature of learners\u2019 skill acquisition. The proposed method ensures that a learner can improve their knowledge state by increasing only one proficiency level of a skill at a time, thereby closely reflecting the incremental characteristics of real-world learning processes. Based on fuzzy skill mappings, this work systematically defines fuzzy competence states, fuzzy competence structures, and consistent fuzzy competence spaces. Then, given a consistent fuzzy competence space and a fuzzy skill mapping, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of gradual and effective learning paths are proposed and proven under the disjunctive model. Finally, a gradual and effective learning path recommendation algorithm is designed, and its effectiveness is validated through simulation experiments. This method provides a theoretical foundation and algorithmic support for the development of adaptive learning systems and intelligent testing systems.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/axioms14060396","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,5,22]],"date-time":"2025-05-22T10:24:45Z","timestamp":1747909485000},"page":"396","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":1,"title":["A Learning Path Recommendation Approach in a Fuzzy Competence Space"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"14","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7741-2797","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ronghai","family":"Wang","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Mathematics and Computer Science, Quanzhou Normal University, Quanzhou 362000, China"},{"name":"Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Data-Intensive Computing, Quanzhou 362000, China"},{"name":"Fujian University Laboratory of Intelligent Computing and Information Processing, Quanzhou 362000, China"}]},{"given":"Baokun","family":"Huang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Mathematics and Statistics, Minnan Normal University, Zhangzhou 363000, China"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9947-6858","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jinjin","family":"Li","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Mathematics and Computer Science, Quanzhou Normal University, Quanzhou 362000, China"},{"name":"Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Data-Intensive Computing, Quanzhou 362000, China"},{"name":"Fujian University Laboratory of Intelligent Computing and Information Processing, Quanzhou 362000, China"},{"name":"School of Mathematics and Statistics, Minnan Normal University, Zhangzhou 363000, China"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,5,22]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"175","DOI":"10.1016\/S0020-7373(85)80031-6","article-title":"Spaces for the assessment of knowledge","volume":"23","author":"Doignon","year":"1985","journal-title":"Int.
