This progress has been driven by parallel development in theory and numerical algorithms. Theoretical development in combining ab initio approaches and many-body methods is particularly promising. A crucial role is also played by a systematic method for deriving a low-energy model, which bridges the gap between real and model systems. In this article, an overview is given tracing the development from the LDA+U to the latest progress in combining the G W method and (extended) dynamical mean-field theory ( G W +EDMFT). The emphasis is on conceptual and theoretical aspects rather than technical ones.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/computation6010026","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,3,20]],"date-time":"2018-03-20T06:57:11Z","timestamp":1521529031000},"page":"26","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":21,"title":["Recent Progress in First-Principles Methods for Computing the Electronic Structure of Correlated Materials"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"6","author":[{"given":"Fredrik","family":"Nilsson","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Physics, Division of Mathematical Physics, Lund University, Professorsgatan 1, 223 63 Lund, Sweden"}]},{"given":"Ferdi","family":"Aryasetiawan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Physics, Division of Mathematical Physics, Lund University, Professorsgatan 1, 223 63 Lund, Sweden"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2018,3,19]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"B864","DOI":"10.1103\/PhysRev.136.B864","article-title":"Inhomogeneous Electron Gas","volume":"136","author":"Hohenberg","year":"1964","journal-title":"Phys.
