{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2025,10,12]],"date-time":"2025-10-12T04:39:55Z","timestamp":1760243995381,"version":"build-2065373602"},"reference-count":38,"publisher":"MDPI AG","issue":"4","license":[{"start":{"date-parts":[[2009,11,10]],"date-time":"2009-11-10T00:00:00Z","timestamp":1257811200000},"content-version":"vor","delay-in-days":0,"URL":"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/3.0\/"}],"content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["Entropy"],"abstract":"<jats:p>In this review we integrate results of long term experimental study on ant \u201clanguage\u201d and intelligence which were fully based on fundamental ideas of Information Theory, such as the Shannon entropy, the Kolmogorov complexity, and the Shannon\u2019s equation connecting the length of a message (l) and its frequency (p), i.e., l = \u2013log p for rational communication systems. This approach enabled us to obtain the following important results on ants\u2019 communication and intelligence: (i) to reveal \u201cdistant homing\u201d in ants, that is, their ability to transfer information about remote events; (ii) to estimate the rate of information transmission; (iii) to reveal that ants are able to grasp regularities and to use them for \u201ccompression\u201d of information; (iv) to reveal that ants are able to transfer to each other the information about the number of objects; (v) to discover that ants can add and subtract small numbers.
