To address this problem, we study the dependence between a number of variables measured at flux towers by quantifying the information flow between the different variables along with the associated time lag. By examining this network of feedback loops for seven ecosystems in different climate regions, we find that: (1) the feedback tends to maximize information production in the entire system, and the latter increases with increasing variability within the whole system; and (2) variables that participate in feedback exhibit moderated variability. Self-organization arises as a tradeoff where the ability of the total system to maximize information production through feedback is limited by moderate variability of the participating variables. This relationship between variability and information production leads to the emergence of ordered organization.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/e12102085","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2010,9,29]],"date-time":"2010-09-29T11:28:31Z","timestamp":1285759711000},"page":"2085-2096","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":42,"title":["Information Driven Ecohydrologic Self-Organization"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"12","author":[{"given":"Praveen","family":"Kumar","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Illinois, Urbana, IL 61801, USA"}]},{"given":"Benjamin L.","family":"Ruddell","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Engineering, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ 85287, USA"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2010,9,29]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1338","DOI":"10.1111\/j.1749-8198.2007.00068.x","article-title":"Variability, feedback, and cooperative process dynamics: Elements of a unifying hydrologic theory","volume":"1","author":"Kumar","year":"2007","journal-title":"Geogr.
