The chaotic signal generated by an improved Colpitts oscillator is designed as a probe signal. Ranging to target is achieved by the cross-correlation between the time-delayed reflected return signal and the replica of the transmitted chaotic signal. In this paper, we explore the performance of the chaotic radar system for target detection and ranging through lossy media. Experimental results show that the designed chaotic radar has the advantages of high range resolution, unambiguous correlation profile, and can be used for through wall target detection and sensing.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/e17042082","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2015,4,8]],"date-time":"2015-04-08T11:23:46Z","timestamp":1428492226000},"page":"2082-2093","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":25,"title":["Target Detection and Ranging through Lossy Media using Chaotic Radar"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"17","author":[{"given":"Bingjie","family":"Wang","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Key Laboratory of Advanced Transducers and Intelligent Control System, Ministry of Education, Taiyuan 030024, China"},{"name":"College of Physics and Optoelectronics, Taiyuan University of Technology, Taiyuan 030024, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Hang","family":"Xu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Key Laboratory of Advanced Transducers and Intelligent Control System, Ministry of Education, Taiyuan 030024, China"},{"name":"College of Physics and Optoelectronics, Taiyuan University of Technology, Taiyuan 030024, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Peng","family":"Yang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Key Laboratory of Advanced Transducers and Intelligent Control System, Ministry of Education, Taiyuan 030024, China"},{"name":"College of Physics and Optoelectronics, Taiyuan University of Technology, Taiyuan 030024, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Li","family":"Liu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Key Laboratory of Advanced Transducers and Intelligent Control System, Ministry of Education, Taiyuan 030024, China"},{"name":"College of Physics and Optoelectronics, Taiyuan University of Technology, Taiyuan 030024, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9296-8278","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jingxia","family":"Li","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Key Laboratory of Advanced Transducers and Intelligent Control System, Ministry of Education, Taiyuan 030024, China"},{"name":"College of Physics and Optoelectronics, Taiyuan University of Technology, Taiyuan 030024, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2015,4,8]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"556","DOI":"10.1016\/j.jfranklin.2008.01.005","article-title":"Through-wall imaging: Historical perspective and future directions","volume":"345","author":"Baranoski","year":"2008","journal-title":"J.
