We aim to investigate the relationship between these two objects, and the fundamental role that duality, in the form of Legendre transforms, plays in both fields. By establishing an analogy between these two approaches, we will show how a fruitful cross-fertilization of techniques may arise from switching formulations based on the cotangent bundle T * Q (as in geometric mechanics) and the tangent bundle T Q (as in information geometry). In particular, we establish, through variational error analysis, that the divergence function agrees with the exact discrete Lagrangian up to third order if and only if Q is a Hessian manifold.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/e19100518","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,9,27]],"date-time":"2017-09-27T10:52:25Z","timestamp":1506509545000},"page":"518","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":16,"title":["Connecting Information Geometry and Geometric Mechanics"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"19","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8326-0830","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Melvin","family":"Leok","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Mathematics, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla, CA 92093, USA"}]},{"given":"Jun","family":"Zhang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Departments of Psychology and Mathematics, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109, USA"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2017,9,27]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Marsden, J.E., and Ratiu, T.S.
