Whilst standard formulations assume continuous inference and control, empirical evidence indicates that humans update their control strategies intermittently, which reduces computational demands and mitigates propagation of correlated noise in closed feedback loops. To address this, we introduce Intermittent Active Inference (IAIF), a novel variant in which sensing, inference, planning, or acting can occur intermittently. This paper investigates intermittent planning, where IAIF agents follow their current plan and only re-plan when the prediction error exceeds a predefined threshold or the Expected Free Energy associated with the current plan surpasses prior estimates. We evaluate intermittent planning in a mouse pointing task, comparing against continuous planning while examining the impact of different threshold parameters on performance and efficiency. The findings indicate that IAIF reduces computation time whilst maintaining task performance, particularly when the number of plans sampled during planning is increased. In case of the proposed trigger based on Expected Free Energy, no additional calibration is required for this. The straightforward integration of IAIF makes it valuable in practical modelling workflows.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/e28030269","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,3,2]],"date-time":"2026-03-02T14:06:56Z","timestamp":1772460416000},"page":"269","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Intermittent Active Inference"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"28","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-2445-152X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Markus","family":"Klar","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, Glasgow G12 8RZ, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-1828-4008","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Sebastian","family":"Stein","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, Glasgow G12 8RZ, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0009-0003-4392-7092","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Fraser","family":"Paterson","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, Glasgow G12 8RZ, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-8085-7853","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"John H.","family":"Williamson","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, Glasgow G12 8RZ, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4286-9113","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Henrik","family":"Gollee","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow, Glasgow G12 8QQ, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4228-7962","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Roderick","family":"Murray-Smith","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, Glasgow G12 8RZ, UK"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2026,2,28]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Garcia, F., and Rachelson, E.
