We applied the methodology to a simple model of mean household income in the European Union regions to allow easy understanding and reproducibility of the analysis. The results are encouraging and suggest an improvement in the prediction power compared to previous techniques. The algorithm has been implemented in R and is available in the updated version of the SpatialML package in the CRAN repository.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/ijgi11090471","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,8,31]],"date-time":"2022-08-31T23:53:21Z","timestamp":1661990001000},"page":"471","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":79,"title":["A Forest of Forests: A Spatially Weighted and Computationally Efficient Formulation of Geographical Random Forests"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"11","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0001-2058","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Stefanos","family":"Georganos","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Division of Geoinformatics, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, 10044 Stockholm, Sweden"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-1949-6248","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Stamatis","family":"Kalogirou","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Data and Technology for Audit (DATA), European Court of Auditors, 1615 Luxembourg, Luxembourg"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2022,8,31]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"e5518","DOI":"10.7717\/peerj.5518","article-title":"Random Forest as a Generic Framework for Predictive Modeling of Spatial and Spatio-Temporal Variables","volume":"6","author":"Hengl","year":"2018","journal-title":"PeerJ"},{"key":"ref_2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"121","DOI":"10.1080\/10106049.2019.1595177","article-title":"Geographical Random Forests: A Spatial Extension of the Random Forest Algorithm to Address Spatial Heterogeneity in Remote Sensing and Population Modelling","volume":"36","author":"Georganos","year":"2019","journal-title":"Geocarto Int."},{"key":"ref_3","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"106094","DOI":"10.1016\/j.compag.2021.106094","article-title":"A Random Forest-Based Algorithm for Data-Intensive Spatial Interpolation in Crop Yield Mapping","volume":"184","author":"Mariano","year":"2021","journal-title":"Comput.
