However, the substantial amount of relevant literature poses a challenge for researchers aiming to obtain a rapid understanding of the intellectual structure of this research field. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the use of bibliometric analysis methods and multiple visual metaphors to visualize the intellectual structure of eye movement research in cartography, including the classic literature, research theme clusters, and research hotspots, etc. We also explain the use of geovisualization method, which can efficiently represent the spatial distribution of scientific power. Although the analysis results may not fully describe the whole research field, this method is generally applicable. We hope that it will not only help researchers to quickly grasp the evolution and trends of this research field, but will also become a novel method of merging geovisualization with knowledge visualization.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/ijgi5100168","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2016,9,23]],"date-time":"2016-09-23T07:32:37Z","timestamp":1474615957000},"page":"168","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":12,"title":["Visualizing the Intellectual Structure of Eye Movement Research in Cartography"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"5","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9534-7928","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Shuang","family":"Wang","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Zhengzhou Institute of Surveying and Mapping, Zhengzhou 450052, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Yufen","family":"Chen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Zhengzhou Institute of Surveying and Mapping, Zhengzhou 450052, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Yecheng","family":"Yuan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"State Key Laboratory of Resources and Environmental Information System, Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100101, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Haiyun","family":"Ye","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Geography, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA 93106-4060, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Shulei","family":"Zheng","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Zhengzhou Institute of Surveying and Mapping, Zhengzhou 450052, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2016,9,23]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","unstructured":"Duchowski, A.T.
