To solve the legibility problem with respect to the generalization of dispersed rural buildings, selection of buildings is necessary and can be transformed into an optimization problem. In this paper, an improved genetic algorithm for building selection is designed to be able to incorporate cartographic constraints related to the building selection problem. Part of the local constraints for building selection is used to constrain the encoding and genetic operation. To satisfy other local constraints, a preparation phase is necessary before building selection, which includes building enlargement, local displacement, conflict detection, and attribute enrichment. The contextual constraints are used to ascertain a fitness function. The experimental results indicate that the algorithm proposed in this article can obtain good results for building selection whilst preserving the spatial distribution characteristics of buildings.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/ijgi6090271","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2017,8,30]],"date-time":"2017-08-30T10:40:00Z","timestamp":1504089600000},"page":"271","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":24,"title":["Contextual Building Selection Based on a Genetic Algorithm in Map Generalization"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"6","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4045-5398","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Lin","family":"Wang","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Resource and Environmental Science, Wuhan University, Wuhan 430079, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5863-1946","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Qingsheng","family":"Guo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Resource and Environmental Science, Wuhan University, Wuhan 430079, China"},{"name":"State Key Laboratory of Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing, Wuhan University, Wuhan 430079, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Yuangang","family":"Liu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Geoscience, Yangtze University, Wuhan 430010, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Yageng","family":"Sun","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Wuhan Geomatics Institute, Wuhan 430022, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Zhiwei","family":"Wei","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Resource and Environmental Science, Wuhan University, Wuhan 430079, China"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2017,8,30]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","unstructured":"McMaster, R.B., and Shea, K.S.
