AI, particularly in the form of advanced chatbots like ChatGPT, is increasingly recognized as a valuable tool for engagement in higher education institutions (HEIs). This growing trend highlights the potential of AI to enhance student engagement and subsequently improve academic performance. Given this development, it is crucial for HEIs to delve deeper into the potential integration of AI-driven chatbots into educational practices. The aim of this study was to conduct a comprehensive review of the use of ChatGPT in teaching and learning within higher education. To offer a comprehensive viewpoint, it had two primary objectives: to identify the key factors influencing the adoption and acceptance of ChatGPT in higher education, and to investigate the roles of institutional policies and support systems in the acceptance of ChatGPT in higher education. A bibliometric analysis methodology was employed in this study, and a PRISMA diagram was used to explain the papers included in the analysis. The findings reveal the increasing adoption of ChatGPT within the higher education sector while also identifying the challenges faced during its implementation, ranging from technical issues to educational adaptations.
