The micron-sized Archimedes screws were fabricated using the two-photon polymerization technique. Free-floating screws trapped by optical tweezers align in the laser irradiation direction and rotate spontaneously. The influences of the screw pitch and the number of screw blades have been investigated in our previous studies. In this paper, the blade thickness and the central rod of the screw were further investigated. The experimental results indicate that the blade thickness contributes to rotational stability, but not to rotational speed, and that the central rod stabilizes the rotating screw but is not conducive to rotational speed. Finally, the effect of the numerical aperture (NA) of the optical tweezers was investigated through a demonstration. The NA is inversely proportional to the rotational speed.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/mi6060674","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2015,6,10]],"date-time":"2015-06-10T14:06:12Z","timestamp":1433945172000},"page":"674-683","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":6,"title":["Rotational Efficiency of Photo-Driven Archimedes Screws for Micropumps"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"6","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9823-3141","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Chih-Lang","family":"Lin","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science, Central Taiwan University of Science and Technology, 406 Taichung, Taiwan"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Yu-Sheng","family":"Lin","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science, Central Taiwan University of Science and Technology, 406 Taichung, Taiwan"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Patrice","family":"Baldeck","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"University Grenoble 1, CNRS, LIPhy UMR 5588, 38402 Grenoble, France"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2015,6,9]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"132","DOI":"10.1364\/OL.22.000132","article-title":"Three-dimensional microfabrication with two-photon-absorbed photopolymerization","volume":"22","author":"Maruo","year":"1997","journal-title":"Opt.
