However, in face-to-face situations, it can be difficult to prompt others to self-disclose because people often feel embarrassed disclosing personal matters to others. Although artificial agents without strong social pressure for listeners to induce self-disclosure is a promising engineering method that can be applied in daily stress management and reduce depression, gender difference is known to make a drastic difference of the attitude toward robots. We hypothesized that, as compared to men, women tend to prefer robots as a listener for their self-disclosure. The experimental results that are based on questionnaires and the actual self-disclosure behavior indicate that men preferred to self-disclose to the human listener, while women did not discriminate between robots and humans as listeners for their self-disclosure in the willingness and the amount of self-disclosure. This also suggests that the gender difference needs to be considered when robots are used as a self-disclosure listener.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/mti4030035","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,6,30]],"date-time":"2020-06-30T09:04:59Z","timestamp":1593507899000},"page":"35","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":18,"title":["Japanese Young Women Did not Discriminate between Robots and Humans as Listeners for Their Self-Disclosure -Pilot Study-"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"4","author":[{"given":"Takahisa","family":"Uchida","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University, Osaka 560-853, Japan"},{"name":"Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR), Kyoto 619-0288, Japan"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Hideyuki","family":"Takahashi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University, Osaka 560-853, Japan"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Midori","family":"Ban","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University, Osaka 560-853, Japan"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Jiro","family":"Shimaya","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University, Osaka 560-853, Japan"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Takashi","family":"Minato","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR), Kyoto 619-0288, Japan"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Kohei","family":"Ogawa","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University, Osaka 560-853, Japan"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Yuichiro","family":"Yoshikawa","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University, Osaka 560-853, Japan"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Hiroshi","family":"Ishiguro","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University, Osaka 560-853, Japan"},{"name":"Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR), Kyoto 619-0288, Japan"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,6,30]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","unstructured":"Jourard, S.M.
