This paper presents a robot capable of playing Russian checkers designed for entertaining, training, and research purposes. Its control program is based on a novel unsupervised self-learning algorithm inspired by AlphaZero and represents the first successful attempt of using this approach in the checkers game. The main engineering challenge in mechanics is to develop a board state acquisition system non-sensitive to lighting conditions, which is achieved by rejecting computer vision and utilizing magnetic sensors instead. An original robot face is designed to endow the robot an ability to express its attributed emotional state. Testing the robot at open-air multiday exhibitions shows the robustness of the design to difficult exploitation conditions and the high interest of visitors to the robot.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/robotics9040107","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,12,9]],"date-time":"2020-12-09T09:17:58Z","timestamp":1607505478000},"page":"107","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["Interactive Robot for Playing Russian Checkers"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"9","author":[{"given":"Ekaterina E.","family":"Kopets","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Youth Research Institute, ETU LETI, 197376 St. Petersburg, Russia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-2591-0962","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Artur I.","family":"Karimov","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Youth Research Institute, ETU LETI, 197376 St. Petersburg, Russia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Georgii Y.","family":"Kolev","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Youth Research Institute, ETU LETI, 197376 St. Petersburg, Russia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0770-0275","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Lorenzo","family":"Scalera","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Polytechnic Department of Engineering and Architecture, University of Udine, 33100 Udine, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-8941-4220","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Denis N.","family":"Butusov","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Youth Research Institute, ETU LETI, 197376 St. Petersburg, Russia"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,12,9]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"81","DOI":"10.1162\/105420499760347342","article-title":"Performing the Intelligent Machine: Deception and Enchantment in the Life of the Automaton Chess Player","volume":"43","author":"Sussman","year":"1999","journal-title":"TDR\/The Drama Rev."},{"key":"ref_2","unstructured":"Standage, T.
