With respect to the calibration of these sensors, they are broadly classified into two types, namely government systems and commercial systems. Because of the differences in the design and mission of these sensor types, calibration approaches are often substantially different. Thus, an opportunity exists to foster discussion between calibration teams for these sensors with the goal of improving overall sensor calibration and data interoperability. The approach used to accomplish this task was a one-day workshop where team members from both government and commercial sensors could share best practices, discuss methods for collaboration and improvement, and make recommendations for continuing activities. Five major recommendations were developed from the event that focused on coordinated activities using pseudo invariant calibration sites (PICS), broader and more consistent communication, collaboration on specific cross-calibration opportunities, developing a reference sensor for all optical systems, and encouraging the coordinated development of surface reflectance products. Workshop participants concluded that regular interactions between these teams could foster a better calibration of all sensor systems and accelerate the improved interoperability of surface products.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/rs12152468","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,8,3]],"date-time":"2020-08-03T06:16:47Z","timestamp":1596435407000},"page":"2468","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":15,"title":["Observations and Recommendations for Coordinated Calibration Activities of Government and Commercial Optical Satellite Systems"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"12","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7379-4679","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Dennis","family":"Helder","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"U.S. Geological Survey, Earth Resources Observation and Science Center, 47914 252nd Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57198, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Cody","family":"Anderson","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"U.S. Geological Survey, Earth Resources Observation and Science Center, 47914 252nd Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57198, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Keith","family":"Beckett","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Planet, Inc., San Francisco, CA 94103, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Rasmus","family":"Houborg","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Planet, Inc., San Francisco, CA 94103, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Ignacio","family":"Zuleta","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Planet, Inc., San Francisco, CA 94103, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Valentina","family":"Boccia","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"European Space Agency, Science, Applications and Future Technologies Department, Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes, ESRIN, Via Galileo Galilei snc, I-00044 Frascati, Italy"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7393-5910","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Sebastien","family":"Clerc","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"ACRI-ST, 260 Route du Pin Montard, 06904 Sophia Antipolis, France"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Michele","family":"Kuester","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Maxar (previously Digital Globe), Remote Sensing Sciences, 1300 W. 120th Ave, Westminster, CO 80234, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Brian","family":"Markham","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD 20771, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Mary","family":"Pagnutti","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Innovative Imaging and Research, Building 1103, Suite 140C, Stennis Space Center, Hancock County, MS 39529, USA"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,7,31]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"10232","DOI":"10.3390\/rs61010232","article-title":"The Spectral Response of the Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager","volume":"6","author":"Barsi","year":"2014","journal-title":"Remote Sens."},{"key":"ref_2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"289","DOI":"10.1016\/j.rse.2016.12.030","article-title":"Landsat 8 remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) products: Evaluations, intercomparisons, and enhancements","volume":"190","author":"Pahlevan","year":"2017","journal-title":"Remote Sens.
