However, its estimation capability has not been demonstrated by real projects. Theoretical analysis through admittance shows that compared with gravity disturbance, gravity gradient is more sensitive to the short-wavelength seafloor topography but diminishes faster with the increase of the distance between the seafloor and airplane, indicating its superiority is recovering short-wavelength topographic features over shallow waters. We present the first numerical experiment that estimates seafloor topography from a 0.4-km resolution, real airborne gravity gradients. It is shown that airborne gravity gradiometry can recover smaller topographic features than typical airborne gravimetry, but the estimation accuracy is only \u00b117 m due to the presence of subsurface density variations. The long-wavelength effect of the subsurface density variations can be removed with the aid of constraining bathymetry inside the study area, whereas the short wavelengths cannot. This study expands the applications of airborne gravity gradiometry, and helps glaciologists understand its performance in seafloor topography estimation.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/rs12244092","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2020,12,15]],"date-time":"2020-12-15T09:12:57Z","timestamp":1608023577000},"page":"4092","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":9,"title":["On the Feasibility of Seafloor Topography Estimation from Airborne Gravity Gradients: Performance Analysis Using Real Data"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"12","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4156-174X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Junjun","family":"Yang","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Geophysics and PGMF, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430074, China"},{"name":"MOE Key Laboratory of Fundamental Physical Quantities Measurement, Hubei Key Laboratory of Gravitation and Quantum Physics, PGMF and School of Physics, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430074, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Zhicai","family":"Luo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Institute of Geophysics and PGMF, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430074, China"},{"name":"MOE Key Laboratory of Fundamental Physical Quantities Measurement, Hubei Key Laboratory of Gravitation and Quantum Physics, PGMF and School of Physics, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430074, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-1014-9784","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Liangcheng","family":"Tu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"TianQin Research Center for Gravitational Physics, School of Physics and Astronomy, Sun Yat-sen University, Zhuhai 519082, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Shanshan","family":"Li","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Surveying and Mapping, Information Engineering University, Zhengzhou 450001, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Jingxue","family":"Guo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Polar Research Institute of China, Shanghai 200136, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Diao","family":"Fan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Surveying and Mapping, Information Engineering University, Zhengzhou 450001, China"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2020,12,15]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","first-page":"54","article-title":"Vector gravimetry using GPS in free-fall and in an Earth-fixed frame","volume":"66","author":"Jekeli","year":"1992","journal-title":"J.
