This is probably a consequence of the difficulty of providing reliable estimations of the cloud base height from visible and infrared radiances from current imagers. We hypothesize that existing algorithms suffer from the accumulation of errors from upstream retrievals necessary to estimate the cloud base height, and that this hampers higher predictability in the retrievals to be achieved. To test this hypothesis, we trained a statistical model based on the random forest algorithm to retrieve the cloud base height, using as predictors the radiances from Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES-16) and variables from a numerical weather prediction model. The predictand data consisted of cloud base height observations recorded at meteorological aerodrome report (METAR) stations over an extended region covering the contiguous USA. Our results indicate the potential of the proposed methodology. In particular, the performance of the cloud base height retrievals appears to be superior to the state-of-the-science algorithms, which suffer from the accumulation of errors from upstream retrievals. We also find a direct relationship between the errors and the mean cloud base height predicted over the region, which allowed us to obtain estimations of both the cloud base height and its error.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/rs13030375","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,1,22]],"date-time":"2021-01-22T11:13:53Z","timestamp":1611314033000},"page":"375","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":4,"title":["Exploring the Potential of Statistical Modeling to Retrieve the Cloud Base Height from Geostationary Satellites: Applications to the ABI Sensor on Board of the GOES-R Satellite Series"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"13","author":[{"given":"Pedro A.","family":"Jim\u00e9nez","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder, CO 80301, USA"}]},{"given":"Tyler","family":"McCandless","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"E Source, Boulder, CO 80301, USA"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,1,22]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1193","DOI":"10.1007\/s00024-007-0214-7","article-title":"Inferring low cloud base heights at night for aviation using satellite infrared and surface temperature data","volume":"164","author":"Ellrod","year":"2007","journal-title":"Pure Appl.
