Sea surface salinity (SSS) is an important factor in ocean science, and is used to estimate oceanic carbon fluxes, trace red tides, and calculate other physical processes at the surface. In this study, a proxy was developed using remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) centered at 490 nm (band 3), 555 nm (band 4), 660 nm (band 5), and 680 nm (band 6), and salinity (data from summer cruises during the period of 2011\u20132016). It was then validated to map LSW plumes in the East China Sea. The GOCI-derived surface salinity was determined by the empirical relationships between Rrs at the four bands and in situ wave glider SSS data (August 2016), and was validated with synchronous in situ hydrographic SSS data (August 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2016). The GOCI-derived SSS was considered reliable in terms of the validation with the in situ measurement with a high coefficient of determination along with a low RMSE (R2 = 0.803, RMSE = 0.914, N = 21), and in comparisons with two previous models that were used to derive SSS in the East China Sea. The GOCI-derived SSS was successfully used to examine time-series variations on diurnal and daily scales, and the effects of a typhoon in terms of marine physical and biological properties in combination with the chlorophyll-a concentration and sea surface temperature.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/rs13142676","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2021,7,7]],"date-time":"2021-07-07T12:31:25Z","timestamp":1625661085000},"page":"2676","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":9,"title":["The Applicability of the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager to the Mapping of Sea Surface Salinity in the East China Sea"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"13","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9743-7636","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jong-Kuk","family":"Choi","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Korea Ocean Satellite Centre, Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology, Busan 49111, Korea"}]},{"given":"Young-Baek","family":"Son","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Jeju Marine Research Section, Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology, Jeju 63349, Korea"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-1262-7786","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Myung-Sook","family":"Park","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Korea Ocean Satellite Centre, Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology, Busan 49111, Korea"}]},{"given":"Deuk-Jae","family":"Hwang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Korea Ocean Satellite Centre, Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology, Busan 49111, Korea"},{"name":"Department of Ocean Science, University of Science and Technology, Daejeon 34113, Korea"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-2240-4562","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Jae-Hyun","family":"Ahn","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Korea Ocean Satellite Centre, Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology, Busan 49111, Korea"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3862-396X","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Young-Gyu","family":"Park","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Ocean Circulation Research Center, Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, Busan 49111, Korea"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2021,7,7]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1035","DOI":"10.1175\/2010JPO4167.1","article-title":"Offshore Detachment Process of the low-salinity water around Changjiang Bank in the East China Sea","volume":"40","author":"Moon","year":"2010","journal-title":"J.
