Street vendors temporarily appear in a vibrant space, closely engaging with numerous pedestrians. Is street vending distribution related to street network configuration? And if so, in what ways? This study investigates the heterogeneous relationships between pedestrians, vendors and the urban and suburban places they inhabit in Yuncheng by contrasting two different types of pedestrian-driven maps. The vending distribution map was identified via semi-structured interviews with urban managers (n = 11) in 2017. The spatial network configuration was examined through space syntax segment angular analysis, containing Integration, Choice and Combined Centrality properties at macro-, meso- and micro-scales. By overlapping the distribution map to the syntactic maps in the Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS) platform, our results show that street vending distribution is most related to the Choice property at the meso-scale. Using semi-structured interviews (n = 53) and observations at two specific sites, we further found relationships tend to be opposed in urban and suburban areas. The study provides an alternative approach to integrating quantitative and qualitative data, expanding the theoretical and empirical understanding of spatial configuration and urban street activities related to walking and vending. This understanding has the potential to contribute to the design of more liveable street spaces.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/rs14092065","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,4,26]],"date-time":"2022-04-26T02:14:39Z","timestamp":1650939279000},"page":"2065","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":12,"title":["Exploring Dynamic Street Vendors and Pedestrians through the Lens of Static Spatial Configuration in Yuncheng, China"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"14","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-1900-4648","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Ziwen","family":"Sun","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Design and Art, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing 100081, China"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-6186-1037","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Iain","family":"Scott","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh EH3 9DF, UK"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0986-3887","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Simon","family":"Bell","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh EH3 9DF, UK"},{"name":"Department of Landscape Architecture, Estonian University of Life Sciences, 51014 Tartu, Estonia"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-9539-6615","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Yufeng","family":"Yang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Space Syntax Laboratory, The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, London WC1E 6BT, UK"}]},{"given":"Zichu","family":"Yang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"School of Design and Art, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing 100081, China"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2022,4,26]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"89","DOI":"10.1016\/j.healthplace.2015.12.009","article-title":"Street network measures and adults\u2019 walking for transport: Application of space syntax","volume":"38","author":"Koohsari","year":"2016","journal-title":"Health Place"},{"key":"ref_2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"2483","DOI":"10.1177\/0042098014544763","article-title":"The impact of street network connectivity on pedestrian volume","volume":"52","author":"Hajrasouliha","year":"2015","journal-title":"Urban Stud.
