By comparison with the equivalent channels onboard Fengyun-3D (FY-3D) and advanced technology microwave sounder (ATMS), the data quality of FY-3E Microwave Humidity Sounder-II (MWHS-II) is improved and comparable to ATMS, while the data of FY-3E Microwave Temperature Sounder-III (MWTS-III) are slightly worse than data of FY-3D. The data of FY-3E MWTS-III are more susceptible to the early-morning orbit than the data of MWHS-II. In addition, striping noise is still present in channels 5\u201310 of MWTS-III. After the assessments, FY-3E microwave data are preprocessed and assimilated in the global forecast system for the Chinese Meteorology Administration (CMA-GFS). A total of six individual experiments over the period from 16 July to 15 August 2021 were conducted and the impact was evaluated with the composite score used in operation. It is shown that not only the forecasts for the southern hemisphere and tropics are improved significantly, but also the predictions for the northern hemisphere show some improvements in an overall neutral change from adding FY-3E microwave sounding instruments. The impact of FY-3E microwave radiance is equivalent to ATMS as they are assimilated individually. Furthermore, we note that the forecast impact is affected by the cloud detection scheme to a large extent.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/rs14195014","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,10,10]],"date-time":"2022-10-10T03:07:28Z","timestamp":1665371248000},"page":"5014","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":12,"title":["Impact of Fengyun-3E Microwave Temperature and Humidity Sounder Data on CMA Global Medium Range Weather Forecasts"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"14","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-3835-8158","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Wanlin","family":"Kan","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Key Laboratory of Transportation Meteorology of China Meteorological Administration, Nanjing Joint Institute for Atmospheric Sciences, Nanjing 210041, China"}]},{"given":"Peiming","family":"Dong","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"State Key Laboratory of Severe Weather, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Beijing 100081, China"}]},{"given":"Fuzhong","family":"Weng","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"CMA Earth System Modeling and Prediction Centre (CEMC), China Meteorological Administration, Beijing 100081, China"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-4095-3765","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Hao","family":"Hu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"CMA Earth System Modeling and Prediction Centre (CEMC), China Meteorological Administration, Beijing 100081, China"}]},{"given":"Changjiao","family":"Dong","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"CMA Earth System Modeling and Prediction Centre (CEMC), China Meteorological Administration, Beijing 100081, China"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2022,10,9]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1280","DOI":"10.1175\/WAF-D-15-0025.1","article-title":"Assessment of FY-3A and FY-3B MWHS observations","volume":"30","author":"Chen","year":"2015","journal-title":"Weather Forecast."},{"key":"ref_2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"3189","DOI":"10.1002\/qj.3172","article-title":"The growing impact of satellite observations sensitive to humidity, cloud and precipitation","volume":"143","author":"Geer","year":"2017","journal-title":"Q.
