With the advancement of satellite technology, the satellite Internet of Things is further developed along with a new generation of information technology and commercial markets. However, existing random access protocols cannot cope with the access of a large number of sensors and short burst transmissions. The current satellite Internet of Things application scenarios are divided into two categories, one has only sensor nodes and no sink nodes, and the other has sink nodes. A time-slot random access protocol based on Walsh code is proposed for the satellite Internet-of-Things scenario with sink nodes. In this paper, the load estimation algorithm is used to reduce the resource occupancy rate in the case of medium and low load, and a dynamic Walsh code slot random access protocol is proposed to select the appropriate Walsh code length and frame length h. The simulation results show that the slotted random access protocol based on Walsh code can effectively improve the throughput of the system under high load. The introduction of load estimation in the case of medium and low load can effectively reduce the resource utilization of the system, and ensure that the performance of the access protocol based on Walsh codes does not deteriorate. However, in the case of high load, a large resource overhead is still required to ensure the access performance of the system.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/rs14246402","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2022,12,19]],"date-time":"2022-12-19T08:41:41Z","timestamp":1671439301000},"page":"6402","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Load Estimation Based Dynamic Access Protocol for Satellite Internet of Things"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"14","author":[{"given":"Mingchuan","family":"Yang","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Communication Research Center, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin 150001, China"}]},{"given":"Guanchang","family":"Xue","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Communication Research Center, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin 150001, China"}]},{"given":"Botao","family":"Liu","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Communication Research Center, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin 150001, China"}]},{"given":"Yupu","family":"Yang","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Communication Research Center, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin 150001, China"}]},{"given":"Yanyong","family":"Su","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Communication Research Center, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin 150001, China"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2022,12,19]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"4855","DOI":"10.1109\/JIOT.2020.3030263","article-title":"QoE-Aware Intelligent Satellite Constellation Design in Satellite Internet of Things","volume":"8","author":"Dai","year":"2021","journal-title":"IEEE Internet Things J."},{"key":"ref_2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"113","DOI":"10.1109\/JIOT.2015.2487046","article-title":"Satellite Communications Supporting Internet of Remote Things","volume":"3","author":"Sanctis","year":"2016","journal-title":"IEEE Internet Things J."},{"key":"ref_3","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"105270","DOI":"10.1016\/j.nanoen.2020.105270","article-title":"Iridium-based nanomaterials for electrochemical water splitting","volume":"78","author":"Chen","year":"2020","journal-title":"Nano Energy"},{"key":"ref_4","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","unstructured":"Elbehiery, K., and Elbehiery, H.
