PSCs play an important role in the ozone chemistry and the dehydration and denitrification of the stratosphere. Lidars with a depolarization channel may be used to detect and classify different classes of PSCs. The main PSC classes are water ice, nitric acid trihydrate (NAT), and supercooled ternary solutions (STSs), the latter being liquid droplets consisting of water, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid. PSCs have been observed at the lidar observatory at Concordia Station from 2014 onward. The harsh environmental conditions at Concordia during winter render successful lidar operation difficult. To facilitate the operation of the observatory, several measures have been put in place to achieve an almost complete remote control of the system. PSC occurrence is strongly correlated with local temperatures and is affected by dynamics, as the PSC coverage during the observation season shows. PSC observations in 2021 are shown as an example of the capability and functionality of the lidar observatory. A comparison of the observations with the satellite-borne CALIOP (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization) lidar has been made to demonstrate the quality of the data and their representativeness for the Antarctic Plateau.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/rs16122228","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,6,19]],"date-time":"2024-06-19T11:47:17Z","timestamp":1718797637000},"page":"2228","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Polar Stratospheric Cloud Observations at Concordia Station by Remotely Controlled Lidar Observatory"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"16","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7274-1279","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Luca","family":"Di Liberto","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"CNR-Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate, Via Fosso del Cavaliere 100, 00133 Rome, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0003-0718-3068","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Francesco","family":"Colao","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"ENEA (Agenzia Nazionale per le Nuove Tecnologie, L\u2019energia e lo Sviluppo Economico Sostenibile), Via Enrico Fermi 45, 00044 Frascati, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-7118-0817","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Federico","family":"Serva","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"CNR-ISMAR (Istitute of Marine Science),Via Fosso del Cavaliere 100, 00133 Roma, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7047-6213","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Alessandro","family":"Bracci","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"CNR-Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate, Via Fosso del Cavaliere 100, 00133 Rome, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-2886-2601","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Francesco","family":"Cairo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"CNR-Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate, Via Fosso del Cavaliere 100, 00133 Rome, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-3025-5237","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Marcel","family":"Snels","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"CNR-Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate, Via Fosso del Cavaliere 100, 00133 Rome, Italy"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2024,6,19]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1848","DOI":"10.1175\/1520-0477(1991)072<1848:TPLTFC>2.0.CO;2","article-title":"The Polarization Lidar Technique for Cloud Research: A Review and Current Assessment","volume":"72","author":"Sassen","year":"1991","journal-title":"Bull.
