We investigate the feasibility of the approach with two case studies on trees, assess the accuracy with laboratory reference measurements, and identify the main sources of error, and the ways to mitigate their effect on the results. We show that the changes in the tree branching structure can be reproduced with about \u00b110% accuracy. As the current biomass detection is based on destructive sampling, and the change detection is based on empirical models, our approach provides a non-destructive tool for monitoring important forest characteristics without laborious biomass sampling. The efficiency of the approach enables the repeating of these measurements over time for a large number of samples, providing a fast and effective means for monitoring forest growth, mortality, and biomass in 3D.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/rs6053906","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2014,4,30]],"date-time":"2014-04-30T13:16:54Z","timestamp":1398863814000},"page":"3906-3922","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":78,"title":["Change Detection of Tree Biomass with Terrestrial Laser Scanning and Quantitative Structure Modelling"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"6","author":[{"given":"Sanna","family":"Kaasalainen","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Finnish Geodetic Institute, Geodeetinrinne 2, FI-02431 Masala, Finland"}]},{"given":"Anssi","family":"Krooks","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Finnish Geodetic Institute, Geodeetinrinne 2, FI-02431 Masala, Finland"}]},{"given":"Jari","family":"Liski","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Finnish Environment Institute, Mechelininkatu 34a, FI-00251 Helsinki, Finland"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5471-0970","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Pasi","family":"Raumonen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Tampere University of Technology, Department of Mathematics, P.O.
