Most methods for detecting disturbances and measuring forest health are based on multi- and hyperspectral imaging. We conducted a test with spruce and pine trees using a hyperspectral Lidar instrument in a laboratory to determine the capability of combined range and reflectance measurements to investigate forest health. A simple drought treatment was conducted by leaving the harvested trees outdoors without a water supply for 12 days. The results showed statistically significant variation in reflectance after the drought treatment for both species. However, the changes differed between the species, indicating that drought-induced alterations in spectral characteristics may be species-dependent. Based on our results, hyperspectral Lidar has the potential to detect drought in spruce and pine trees.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/rs71013863","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2015,10,26]],"date-time":"2015-10-26T04:12:04Z","timestamp":1445832724000},"page":"13863-13877","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":21,"title":["Investigating Bi-Temporal Hyperspectral Lidar Measurements from Declined Trees\u2014Experiences from Laboratory Test"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"7","author":[{"given":"Samuli","family":"Junttila","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Forest Sciences, University of Helsinki, FI-00014 Helsinki, Finland"},{"name":"Centre of Excellence in Laser Scanning Research, Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI), FI-02431 Masala, Finland"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Sanna","family":"Kaasalainen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI), FI-02431 Masala, Finland"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-6552-9122","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Mikko","family":"Vastaranta","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Forest Sciences, University of Helsinki, FI-00014 Helsinki, Finland"},{"name":"Centre of Excellence in Laser Scanning Research, Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI), FI-02431 Masala, Finland"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-5486-4582","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Teemu","family":"Hakala","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI), FI-02431 Masala, Finland"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-4826-2929","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Olli","family":"Nevalainen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI), FI-02431 Masala, Finland"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Markus","family":"Holopainen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Forest Sciences, University of Helsinki, FI-00014 Helsinki, Finland"},{"name":"Centre of Excellence in Laser Scanning Research, Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI), FI-02431 Masala, Finland"}],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2015,10,22]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","first-page":"333","article-title":"Climate Change 2007: The Physical Science Basis","volume":"6","author":"Solomon","year":"2007","journal-title":"Agenda"},{"key":"ref_2","unstructured":"Gitay, H., Brown, S., Easterling, W., Jallow, B., Antle, J., Apps, M., Beamish, R., Chapin, T., Cramer, W., and Frangi, J.
