A WBAN provides long-term health monitoring of a patient without any constraint on his\/her normal dailylife activities. This monitoring requires the low-power operation of invasive\/non-invasive sensor nodes. In other words, a power-efficient Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol is required to satisfy the stringent WBAN requirements, including low-power consumption. In this paper, we first outline the WBAN requirements that are important for the design of a low-power MAC protocol. Then we study low-power MAC protocols proposed\/investigated for a WBAN with emphasis on their strengths and weaknesses. We also review different power-efficient mechanisms for a WBAN. In addition, useful suggestions are given to help the MAC designers to develop a low-power MAC protocol that will satisfy the stringent requirements.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s100100128","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2009,12,28]],"date-time":"2009-12-28T13:11:40Z","timestamp":1262005900000},"page":"128-145","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":92,"title":["A Study of MAC Protocols for WBANs"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"10","author":[{"given":"Sana","family":"Ullah","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"UWB-ITRC Center, Inha University, 253 Yonghyun-dong, Nam-gu, Incheon, 402-751, Korea"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Bin","family":"Shen","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"UWB-ITRC Center, Inha University, 253 Yonghyun-dong, Nam-gu, Incheon, 402-751, Korea"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"S.M.","family":"Riazul Islam","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"UWB-ITRC Center, Inha University, 253 Yonghyun-dong, Nam-gu, Incheon, 402-751, Korea"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Pervez","family":"Khan","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"UWB-ITRC Center, Inha University, 253 Yonghyun-dong, Nam-gu, Incheon, 402-751, Korea"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Shahnaz","family":"Saleem","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"UWB-ITRC Center, Inha University, 253 Yonghyun-dong, Nam-gu, Incheon, 402-751, Korea"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Kyung","family":"Sup Kwak","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"UWB-ITRC Center, Inha University, 253 Yonghyun-dong, Nam-gu, Incheon, 402-751, Korea"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2009,12,28]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","unstructured":"(2006).
