Abrasive machining is one of the most important of these processes and therefore merits special attention and study. The objective of this work was to evaluate and demonstrate a process monitoring system for use in the abrasive machining of wood and wood based products. The system developed increases the life of the belt by detecting (using process monitoring sensors) and removing (by cleaning) the abrasive loading during the machining process. This study focused on abrasive belt machining processes and included substantial background work, which provided a solid base for understanding the behavior of the abrasive, and the different ways that the abrasive machining process can be monitored. In addition, the background research showed that abrasive belts can effectively be cleaned by the appropriate cleaning technique. The process monitoring system developed included acoustic emission sensors which tended to be sensitive to belt wear, as well as platen vibration, but not loading, and optical sensors which were sensitive to abrasive loading.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s101110401","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2010,11,18]],"date-time":"2010-11-18T11:53:33Z","timestamp":1290081213000},"page":"10401-10412","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":12,"title":["Process Monitoring Evaluation and Implementation for the Wood Abrasive Machining Process"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"10","author":[{"given":"Daniel E.","family":"Saloni","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Forest Biomaterials, North Carolina State University, Campus Box 8005, Raleigh, NC 27695, USA"}]},{"given":"Richard L.","family":"Lemaster","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Wood Machining and Tooling Research Program, Department of Forest Biomaterials, North Carolina State University, Campus Box 8005, Raleigh, NC 27695, USA"}]},{"given":"Steven D.","family":"Jackson","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Integrated Manufacturing System Engineering Institute, College of Engineering, Campus Box 7915 North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC 27695, USA"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2010,11,18]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","first-page":"73","article-title":"Abrasive versus knife planing","volume":"77","author":"Stewart","year":"1972","journal-title":"Wood Wood Prod"},{"key":"ref_2","first-page":"49","article-title":"A comparison of factors affecting power for abrasive and knife planing of hardwoods","volume":"26","author":"Stewart","year":"1974","journal-title":"Forest Product J"},{"key":"ref_3","first-page":"35","article-title":"Abrasive machining process characterization on material removal rate, final surface texture, and power consumption for wood","volume":"55","author":"Saloni","year":"2005","journal-title":"Forest Products J"},{"key":"ref_4","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"117","DOI":"10.1007\/s001070050026","article-title":"The productivity imperatives in coated abrasives\u2014Application in furniture manufacturing","volume":"57","author":"Ratnasingam","year":"1999","journal-title":"Holz als Roh- und Werkstoff"},{"key":"ref_5","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"223","DOI":"10.1016\/0043-1648(76)90100-9","article-title":"Effects of grit size on abrasion with coated abrasives","volume":"40","author":"Date","year":"1976","journal-title":"Wear"},{"key":"ref_6","first-page":"280","article-title":"Acoustic emission characteristics in wood sanding 2.
