Various spatial pattern analyses applied to the data extracted from the 2-dimensional coordinate positioning of individual bacterial cells at single-cell resolution indicate that microbial colonization within natural biofilms is not a spatially random process, but rather involves strong positive interactions between communicating cells that influence their neighbors\u2019 aggregated colonization behavior. Geostatistical analysis of the data provide statistically defendable estimates of the micrometer scale and interpolation maps of the spatial heterogeneity and local intensity at which these microbial interactions autocorrelate with their spatial patterns of distribution. Including in situ image analysis in cell communication studies fills an important gap in understanding the spatially dependent microbial ecophysiology that governs the intensity of biofilm colonization and its unique architecture.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s120607047","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2012,5,29]],"date-time":"2012-05-29T11:48:24Z","timestamp":1338292104000},"page":"7047-7062","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":13,"title":["CMEIAS-Aided Microscopy of the Spatial Ecology of Individual Bacterial Interactions Involving Cell-to-Cell Communication within Biofilms"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"12","author":[{"given":"Frank B.","family":"Dazzo","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI 48824, USA"}],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2012,5,29]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","unstructured":"Center for Microbial Ecology Image Analysis System (CMEIAS) Available online: http:\/\/cme.msu.edu\/cmeias\/ (accessed on 23 May 2012)."},{"key":"ref_2","unstructured":"Dazzo, F.B., Liu, J., Tang, G., Gross, C., Reddy, C., Monosmith, C., Zhu, G., Wang, J., Li, M., and Philips, N.
