In this paper, we discuss the feasibility of using geographic knowledge from public databases available on the Web (such as OpenStreetMap, Geonames, or DBpedia) to automatically construct such descriptions. We present a general method that uses such information to generate sensor descriptions in natural language. The results of the evaluation of our method in a hydrologic national sensor network showed that this approach is feasible and capable of generating adequate sensor descriptions with a lower development effort compared to other approaches. In the paper we also analyze certain problems that we found in public databases (e.g., heterogeneity, non-standard use of labels, or rigid search methods) and their impact in the generation of sensor descriptions.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.3390\/s150716009","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2015,7,3]],"date-time":"2015-07-03T16:19:37Z","timestamp":1435940377000},"page":"16009-16026","update-policy":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/mdpi_crossmark_policy","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":5,"title":["Using Open Geographic Data to Generate Natural Language Descriptions for Hydrological Sensor Networks"],"prefix":"10.3390","volume":"15","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7145-1974","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Martin","family":"Molina","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Artificial Intelligence, Technical University of Madrid, Campus de Montegancedo S\/N, 28660 Boadilla del Monte, Madrid, Spain"}]},{"given":"Javier","family":"Sanchez-Soriano","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Artificial Intelligence, Technical University of Madrid, Campus de Montegancedo S\/N, 28660 Boadilla del Monte, Madrid, Spain"}]},{"given":"Oscar","family":"Corcho","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Artificial Intelligence, Technical University of Madrid, Campus de Montegancedo S\/N, 28660 Boadilla del Monte, Madrid, Spain"}]}],"member":"1968","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2015,7,3]]},"reference":[{"key":"ref_1","unstructured":"Eberle, J., Calbimonte, J.-P., Sarni, S., and Aberer, K.
